The gamification of education is a current trend in educational research and pedagogical practice. Gaming is one way to engage reluctant learners and/or to speak directly to many learners' lived experiences with out-of-school learning environments -- be they apps, online/digital programs or video games. Individuals are increasingly becoming accustomed to learning new content or skills in environments that employ gaming elements (such as embedded rewards) or in actual video games. As a result, it is important as educators to understand why and how the gamification of education works and why, how and where to effectively implement this approach in one's learning environment.
